LAVA IRIS X8-Budget mobile with good battery and display



Lava International Ltd. is a Telecommunications and Consumer Electronics venture which produces the Lava series of mobile phones. Initially, in 2003 this company was established as Pacetel Communications. Only in 2009 it was renamed as Lava International. After few years later, Intel partnered with Lava. This led to the production of a series of smartphones under the brand name XOLO. This company is mainly known for manufacturing Mobile phones, smart phones and Tablets. Headquartered in Delhi this venture is known for its budget oriented mobile phones. But its quality still needs to improve to gain more customer base. Lava mobiles is known to hold 8% of market share in the Indian mobile phone industry. Another important thing to note is that Lava has set up its R&D department in China. Hence, all the handsets will be mostly influenced by Chinese designs. So, now let us dig in deep about the performance and features of the Lava Iris X8 smart phone in this review.



The Lava Iris X8 smartphone was launched in India on 6th February 2015. During its launch it was priced at INR 8,999/-. After its initial phase it has seen considerable price drop to approximately INR 7,000.           


This smartphone comes with a metal curvature which runs through the entire frame of the phone. It gives the phone a nice solid look. Also this smartphone is pretty sleek with just a thickness of 8.6 mm. The length and breadth of this phone are 143.4 mm and 71 mm respectively. Considering its features and price range, this phone falls into the heavier category of smart phones. It weighs a good 160 g. This could have been reduced a bit. It comes in two colour variations, Black and White.


The display of this smartphone is sized at 5 inches. The type of display used is a capacitive touch display supported by IPS LCD touch. The resolution with which it displays content is 720 x 1280 pixels. The multi touch capacity is up to 2 fingers max. The pixel density of the screen is approximately 294 ppi. The screen gets its protection against scratches from Asahi Dragontrail Glass. This is unique to Lava Iris smartphones.


This device works on Android OS v 4.4.2 (KitKat). Additionally, it is upgradable to v 5.1 (Lollipop). The CPU used in this for processing is Octa – core ARM Cortex – A7 processor. The make of this processor is MediaTek MT6592. For a 8k smart phone, octa core is a pretty good deal. The speed with which this processor performs the tasks is around 1.4 GHz. The graphics interface is taken care by Mali – 450 MP4.


This phone comes with an internal storage capacity of 16GB. But, to make this convincing for the heavy users too this smartphone comes with the option of expanding the memory externally up to 32 GB. The memory expansion can be achieved using a microSD card. It also comes with a RAM of 2GB memory.


Lava Iris X8 comes with a non – removable, Li – Po battery. This battery has a maximum capacity of 2500mAh. For a 8k smartphone this battery specification is above average. The expected stand by time is around 291 h. The talk time though is estimated to be up to 14 h on 2G and 9.5 h on 3G.


Camera: It comes with both a front as well as rear camera. The rear or primary camera is 8MP. It comes with a dual LED flash to enhance the images during capture. The other supportive features are Autofocus and BSI ( Back Illuminated Sensor ). The front camera though is just a mere 3 MP, but for the price of this mobile this specification is acceptable. The extra features with which this camera functions are Digital image stabilisation, Face detection, Exposure compensation, High dynamic range, ISO control and White balance presets.

Audio: The various ringtone formats supported by this smartphone are Polyphonic ringtones and vibration. The other music formats that it supports are 3GP, AAC, AAC+, AMR, Eaac+, MIDI, MP3 and WAV. It comes with an average loudspeaker and the standard 3.5 mm headphones jack. It also has a fully functional FM Radio connectivity feature.

Video: The video recording in this phone is generally performed using the main camera. It can record with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and at a rate of 30fps. The various video formats supported are H.263, H.264 and MPEG4.


Lava Iris X8 comes with two sim slots. Both the sims are of the micro sim type. Both the sims are compatible only with GSM network. Only one sim supports 3G. Both the sims do not function in the 4G mode. The other basic wireless connectivity features like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are functional and well equipped.


Score: Lava Iris X8 has received a feature score of 80 on This shows that it is not really a bad choice considering its low cost too.

Features: The advantages in this smartphone are its low cost, amazing battery and good display. The disadvantages are its below average camera and low RAM.
